Types of Programs

Upward Bound programs provide academic instruction in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature, and foreign languages. Tutoring, counseling, mentoring, cultural enrichment, work-study programs, education or counseling services designed to improve the financial and economic literacy of students; and programs and activities previously mentioned that are specially designed for students who are limited English proficient, students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in postsecondary education, students with disabilities, students who are homeless children and youths, students who are in foster care or are aging out of foster care system or other disconnected students.

The Upward Bound Program’s purpose is to generate skills and motivation necessary for success in education beyond high school among low-income and potential first generation college students who are enrolled in high schools.  The main goal of the Community Teen Coalition Upward Bound program is to remediate and enrich the academic skills of our students in order to prepare them to enter and graduate from postsecondary institutions.

Participant Eligibility

(1) requires that not less than two-thirds of youth participating in the project be low-income individuals who are first generation college students;

(2) requires that the remaining youth participating in the project be either low-income individuals or first generation college students;

(3) requires that there be a determination by the project that the participant has a need for academic support in order to pursue successfully a program of education beyond secondary school; and

(4) requires that such participants be persons who have completed 8 years of elementary education and are at least 13 years of age but not more than 19 years of age.

(5) requires that students are U.S. Citizen

(6) requires that participants must attend one of the high schools in the target area (Banneker or Griffin)

Program Services

Permissible Services – Community Teen Coalition Upward Bound project provides the following services:

(1) instruction in reading, writing, study skills, mathematics, and other subjects necessary for success beyond secondary school;

(2) personal counseling;

(3) academic advice and assistance in secondary school course selection;

(4) tutorial services;

(5) exposure to cultural events, academic programs, and other activities not usually available to disadvantaged youth;

(6) activities designed to acquaint youth participating in the project with the range of career options available to them;

(7) instruction for careers in which persons from disadvantaged backgrounds are particularly under-represented;

(8) financial literacy campaign;

(9) a 6-week summer college simulation program;

(10) Assistance in completing college entrance and financial aid applications;

(11) Assistance in preparing for college entrance exams; and

(12) Work study positions to expose participants to careers requiring a postsecondary degree.
